When you appreciate the strengths of the important people in your life, you can discover when and how we want to spend time with them. By connecting with friends and family through strengths you can brighten the lives of those around you and prevent feelings of isolation and loneliness that have a negative effect on your health.
If your strengths and abilities are undervalued by others, you might feel tired and unmotivated or find that life just isn’t fun anymore. When you feel like your work and talents are unimportant, you might turn off your emotions, zone out, or work in overdrive. You look for safety in activities that fit your comfort level. The way you perceive safety often comes from your strengths, as well as your environment, survival needs, or physical abilities.
Learning that you have your own unique gifts will help you say what you want as an expression of who you are. The ability to say what you want without expecting something in return or validation is a result of self-awareness and self-esteem.
Family belief systems and countries of origin often determine which strengths and talents are most valued and how you best make connections.
All strengths have equal value, but your culture will give higher financial compensation for one strength over another. If you have strengths that are highly valued, you can easily spend your time developing them. You may end up spending most of your time in work that brings financial compensation and respect at the sacrifice of family and health.
